Ohope Beach is a magnificent 11 km stretch of sweeping sandy coastline along the north-east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
This safe South Pacific Ocean beach offers open sea swimming and surfing. The horizon bound panoramic view from the beach takes in Whale Island (a noted conservation area) the world famous active volcanic White Island, and stretches right to Cape Runaway on the East Cape.
The headland at the West End separates Ohope beach from the picturesque Otarawaiwere Bay a popular spot for diving, snorkelling and fishing. This beautiful bay is accessed by track over the headland which offers many breathtaking views.
The protected tidal Ohiwa Harbour at the eastern end of the beach offers a unique and unspoiled environment for many seabirds. These include the rare New Zealand dotterel and the godwit, that having spent the summer in New Zealand makes an incredible journey to Siberia where it stays until the change of seasons brings it back to Ohiwa Harbour.
The Marine Oyster Farm on Ohiwa Harbour is a must-see attraction for oyster lovers.
Temperatures in the summer months are sub tropical with the water being at its warmest December through February.
The hillside backdrop at the West End is one of the best natural stands of native pohutukawa trees in New Zealand which are ablaze with red flowers during the early summer months.
Ohope Beach has year round appeal as it reflects the changing seasons. Most activities are on offer year round as the winter climate is relatively mild.
